Kiki: Hi everyone and welcome back to Sits & Giggles. Today we have the first of a two part story for you, called Blossom Steps Up. So sit back, relax, and let's head to fairy land.
Musical intro:
Blossom buzzed past the daisies and made them sway, and she didn’t even turn around to make sure they were all ok. She was in such a big hurry. The fairy queen had called a gathering for all the fairies-in-waiting, and she was already late. She knew the queen hated it when she was late! She knew this because she was always late. She didn’t mean to be, but being on time was just so difficult!
Her poor wings were starting to grow tired from flying so fast, but she pushed herself to carry on – just up that one hill and she’d see the fairy queen’s sprawling palace in the distance. A little bead of sweat broke out on Blossom’s forehead and she carried on pushing forward and, as the tower of the palace came into view, she took a well-earned second to quickly wipe the sweat on her sleeve and run her fingers through her wind-swept hair. The one thing that the queen hated more than her being late was messiness. So since she was late anyway, she better not look bad too if she could help it.
She smiled at the queen’s guards as she neared the entrance.
“You’re late again Blossom! She won’t be pleased” the one guard scolded, as the other guard gave her a gentle look and said “never mind love, at least you look very pretty today in that lily skirt. The queen’s favourite flowers are lilies, so I’m sure she’ll forgive you.”
Blossom just gave them each a warm smile as she flitted past and through the giant golden gates, into the queen’s private rooms.
As she entered, everything was quiet. She wondered if perhaps she had made it on time after all, when the queen looked in her direction and angrily said “oh Blossom, honestly. Why must you always be late. I hate that your lateness means that I have to repeat myself – especially in situations like this, where the news is just so awful.”
“Oh no your majesty, whatever is wrong?” said Blossom, hoping that her concern would soften the queen’s anger just a little.
The room remained quiet, but now everyone was staring at her. She felt quite uneasy.
“Her majesty was just informing us that the Tooth Fairy has finally taken a holiday. Her first in 426 years. She left for the Pixi Isles this morning” said Brunella, the queen’s sister.
Blossom was confused. “Surely that’s good news? The Tooth Fairy deserves a little time off” she said. “It can’t be easy – all that carrying of teeth around the kingdom.”
“Well yes, of course she deserves a break” said Brunella. “But now we’re facing a crisis of catastrophic proportions. All teeth had been fetched and accounted for before her departure, but now some silly child has fallen off a roof and knocked out 3 teeth. And of course, someone needs to go fetch the teeth and give the child their money. But who?! Who could possibly be strong enough to fly with 3 teeth – from the land of California all the way back here?”
Before she realized she was saying it, Blossom piped up: “I could do it your majesty. My flying is very strong on account of always being late, and if I had time for a few breaks here and there, I’m sure I could manage it.”
The other fairies looked at her in shock. She was less than half the size of the tooth fairy, and far less muscular too. They were probably wondering how she even dared to offer herself up that way.
The fairy queen laughed. “Oh child. Look at you. You could carry one tooth perhaps – but three! There’s no way!”
“We could help her.”
Everyone looked around. “Who said that?” demanded the queen.
“Me. My sister and I. Perhaps we could help.” The crowd parted to show little Eliza stardust and her twin sister Marjorie (who seemed quite shocked that her sister had volunteered their assistance). We could all carry one tooth each. And take some breaks along the way to rest. With three of us, the journey home should take no more than one day.” She stopped talking with a stammer – nervous from everyone staring at her. Then she continued: “And if we wear lightweight lettuce dresses, we won’t be burdened down by our gowns – and we’ll camouflage nicely if we wear lettuce. Anyway, I’m just thinking out loud. Sorry your majesty, I won’t speak out of turn any longer.” And with that, she grabbed her sister’s hand and stood quietly, waiting for the queen’s answer.
“If I allow this to happen” the queen said, “you must not be seen by any humans under any circumstances. Am I making myself clear? We cannot have humans knowing that fairies exist beyond the Tooth Fairy. Who knows what could happen if they found out.”
Blossom smiled at the twins in appreciation and answered the queen: “your majesty, we will take this mission very seriously, and promise to not let you down.”
“Well then,” said the queen, “I suppose I have no choice but to let you go. I expect your return tomorrow evening – with the teeth. Do not bother returning if you lose any of the teeth.” And with that, the queen floated away, leaving everyone in shock behind her.
